Autumn depression
This is known as “seasonal affective disorder,” a type of depression linked to the change of seasons, and most often appears in the fall and winter, according to the official website of the British National Health Insurance System (NHS).
This disorder is caused by decreased exposure to sunlight, which increases the secretion of the hormone "melatonin", which is responsible for the feeling of drowsiness, and reduces the production of the hormone "serotonin", which affects mood, appetite, and sleep.
Coping with Seasonal Affective Disorder
To combat this disorder, five effective steps can be followed:
- Exercise: Staying in bed may seem appealing, but movement can improve your mood. Whether it's going to the gym, doing simple exercises at home, or even walking outdoors, exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which promote feelings of happiness.
- Light therapy: Using artificial lighting similar to sunlight (light box) in the morning for 30-45 minutes can help significantly relieve symptoms within two to three weeks.
- Proper nutrition: Eating foods rich in proteins, such as turkey and broccoli, which stimulate the production of "serotonin", helps improve mood. Eating foods rich in "Omega 3" and vitamins, such as eggs, dark chocolate and green tea, also has a positive effect.
- Social communication: Instead of isolation, try to communicate with friends and spend quality time with them. Going out and exchanging conversations refreshes the psychological state and restores the feeling of vitality.
- Change your routine: Try new activities at home, such as reading, drawing, or enjoying time with your children. Avoid burdening yourself with too many tasks, but focus on priorities to ensure that you get them done without draining your energy.
