Arab Weather - Australian authorities closed Sydney's beaches, including the famous Bondi Beach, to visitors on Thursday. This comes after black balls suspected to be toxic washed up on the shores.

Waverley Council reported Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama beaches were closed as a precaution. Neighbouring Randwick Council also closed four additional beaches further south. However, Bondi and Maroubra beaches reopened later in the day.

Waverley Mayor Will Nemesh said in a statement:

“The safety of our community is our top priority. That’s why we’ve taken precautionary measures to close our beaches.”

Preliminary test results

Initial results from tests carried out by Randwick suggest the mysterious balls are "tar," a mixture of oil and other waste.

“We have a lot of pollutants in the atmosphere and from ships, including plastic, and all of these pollutants are coming to our shores, and unfortunately they are all over the world,” said Monica O’Connell, a resident of the Kogi area.

The NSW Environment Agency confirmed it was conducting special tests and urged people not to swim near or touch any balls.

Sydney has more than 100 world-famous beaches along its coastline, attracting millions of tourists and locals each year.
