Arab Weather - A software bug has recently been discovered that may cause iPhones and iPads to temporarily crash when typing four specific characters. If you type these characters ( “”: :) into the Settings app search bar or the App Library search bar, Apple's device user interface known as "Springboard" may crash.

TechCrunch has verified that the bug occurs when entering these characters in the mentioned locations, causing Springboard to temporarily crash and then reload to the lock screen. In some tests, the issue caused the screen to flash black for a second.

Is this bug a security vulnerability?

Security researcher Ryan Stortz noted that the bug does not constitute a security vulnerability. This view was also echoed by Patrick Wardle, an iOS researcher and founder of security startup DoubleYou. So far, there is no evidence that the bug could be exploited by anyone other than the owner of the device typing the characters. This is different from a 2020 bug that caused the Twitter app to crash when viewing a tweet containing a specific set of characters.
