ArabiaWeather.com - A team of engineers from the University of Southampton in Britain has launched the first drone made with 3D printing technology.

The launch of the aircraft came from the deck of a Royal Warship, to discover the possible use of this type of air vehicle at sea.

After the aircraft was launched from the deck of the Mersey off the coast of Dorset in southern England, it flew on its own on a program-determined path before landing on Chesil Beach.

In detail, the aircraft weighs three kilograms and reaches a meter and a half in length. It is made with 3D printing technology from four main parts and can be installed without the need for any equipment.

Launched from the deck of the warship, it flew about 500 meters at a training facility in Weymouth before landing.

The research was led by a team of scientists and engineers from the University of Southampton and in 2011 they piloted for the first time the world's first 3D printed aircraft.

Professor Andy Kean from the Department of Engineering and Environment at the University of Southampton said that the use of this type of aircraft will continue to increase as manufacturing costs are reduced and the quality of materials used in their manufacture increases.

Royal Navy officials said they were interested in applying the theories of unmanned robotic systems. They stated that the experience helped explore the simplicity of replacing complex equipment with automation systems.
