Hurricane Daniel kills more than 2,000 people in Libya and more than 5,000 people are missing so far
Weather of Arabia - After Hurricane Daniel struck the northern coast of Libya yesterday, the floods that accompanied it claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people, so far, according to what local authorities in Libya reported.
Libyan Prime Minister Osama Hammad said that the death toll from the floods that struck the city of Derna alone reached two thousand people.
Except for the missing, whose numbers exceeded 5,000, the death toll is likely to rise.
The head of the National Unity Government, Abdel Hamid Al-Diibeh, had directed all state agencies to immediately deal with the damage and floods in the eastern cities yesterday, Sunday.
The Libyan authorities also confirmed that the heavy rains caused significant damage to infrastructure and property, while the search is still ongoing for the missing people.
Floods swept through several cities in eastern and western Libya, causing the flow of valleys to flood homes and hospitals, damage cars, and destroy property and roads.
The United Nations mission in Libya said that it is closely following the developments of the storm and will provide urgent relief aid to support response efforts at the local and national levels.
