WHO warns of new outbreak in Europe
The World Health Organization has warned of the possibility of new cases of monkeypox in Europe after Sweden reported its first case of the disease. The warning comes as the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded more than 548 deaths since the start of the year from a more contagious and dangerous strain of the virus.

Monkeypox global health emergency
The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the outbreak of monkeypox in Africa a global health emergency, the highest level of alert issued by the agency. So far, 38,465 cases of the disease have been recorded in 16 African countries since January 2022, with 1,456 deaths, with the number of cases increasing by 160% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to reports from the African Union health agency.

First case of new monkeypox strain in Europe
After Sweden announced the first new outbreaks of the disease in Europe, the World Health Organization’s regional office for Europe indicated that this development “clearly reflects the interconnectedness of the world,” with the possibility of discovering new imported cases of the new strain in Europe in the coming period. The Public Health Agency of Sweden announced on Thursday the registration of the first case of the new strain of monkeypox outside Africa, as the infected person required care in Stockholm and was diagnosed with strain 1, the first case of this type to be recorded outside the African continent.
