Jordan | Will the heat dome affect the Kingdom this August?
Arabia Weather - Weather specialists at the Regional Arab Weather Center said that the heat dome phenomenon moved away from the atmosphere of the Kingdom, thank God, during the month of last July and until the beginning of the current month of August, which is normal, in contrast to some periods of July and August of the year 2023, during which the effects of the heat dome affected the atmosphere. The Kingdom and the Levant in an unusual manner, causing heat waves, and a heat dome is an atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when high air pressure accumulates over a certain area, which leads to the retention of hot air in the lower layers of the atmosphere, and this results in a significant rise in temperatures, and it may continue. This phenomenon lasts for several days, leading to severe heat waves.
Will the heat dome affect Jordan and the Levant?
The effects of the heat dome have moved away from the atmosphere of Jordan and the Levant recently, thank God, as a result of the shape of the weather systems that prevail in the northern hemisphere. The latest outputs from computer numerical models, which simulate the movement of air masses and atmospheric systems for the Northern Hemisphere, especially the European continent and the Levant, indicate that the shape of the atmospheric systems appears remarkable as a result of the flow of upper basins with lower temperatures across the European continent towards the eastern basin of the sea. Mediterranean.
The upper weather systems coming from Eastern Europe are working to shift the upper subtropical high to the east, causing the heat waves and the heat dome to move away from the Levant and Jordan during the current month of July, thank God. Thus, the temperatures were not far from the normal framework despite their rise in some periods.
The heat dome affected the Kingdom in August 2023, and the capital, Amman, recorded record temperatures
Returning to the climate record and reports issued in August 2023, meteorologists at the Arabia Weather Center noted that the effects of the heat dome were not far from the Kingdom as they were this year, as Jordan was affected by the heat dome and the Kingdom was exposed to a severe heat wave during the period from the 12th to the 24th of the month. August 2023 as a result of the Kingdom being affected by the heat dome phenomenon accompanied by a very hot air mass, where hot to very hot weather prevailed in all regions of the Kingdom, which is considered the longest heat wave the Kingdom has witnessed during the Jordanian climate record, during which it recorded new records in the climate record for the maximum temperature in 10 Weather monitoring stations, while during the period 25-31 of August, normal summer weather prevailed during the day in most regions of the Kingdom, with pleasant to moderate temperatures at night.
The average maximum temperature at Amman Civil Airport for the month of August was 35.6 degrees Celsius, which is 2.7 degrees Celsius higher than its general monthly average, while the average minimum temperature at Amman Civil Airport was 21.8 degrees Celsius, which is 1.1 degrees Celsius higher than its general monthly average. At the Kingdom level, it was Al-Baqoura monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature on 08/13/2023, reaching 47.6°C.
Will the thermal dome return to Jordan in the near term?
Meteorologists at the Arabia Weather Center said that the current weather patterns do not indicate the formation of a heat dome over the Kingdom in the near future. Expectations indicate that temperatures will remain within the normal range for the summer, with temperatures rising at some points, but without major impacts threatening the daily lives of citizens.
God knows.
