Jordan: Could it snow in the last days of autumn?
Arab Weather - Sinan Khalaf - With the end of the autumn season approaching, meteorologically and astronomically, and with the Kingdom being affected by the first Siberian wave, which specialists at "Arab Weather" described as early, questions are increasing among the Jordanian public about the extent to which more cold masses are rushing towards the region, and the possibility of snow falling in Jordan in the remainder of the autumn season. Is that possible?
Is it possible for snow to fall in Jordan in the last days of autumn?
This question takes us back to the end of 2013, when the Kingdom was affected by a rare and unique weather system that produced a snowstorm in the “last days of autumn” that remains stuck in the minds of Jordanians to this day. It is the snowstorm Alexa , which began to affect the region in the early hours of Thursday, 12-12-2013, with heavy and widespread snowfall, imposing a curfew after most roads were closed due to the large accumulation of snow.
In detail, the European continent was affected at that time by a strong high pressure system, which caused an extremely cold air mass of polar origin to rush towards the Black Sea, then Turkey, and later to the eastern Mediterranean region, including the Kingdom.
This coincided with the formation of a deep air depression centered initially over Syria and Lebanon, pushing heavy rains towards the Kingdom, which were in the form of snow accumulating heavily on the heights of the Jordanian capital, Amman, with the thickness of the snow exceeding 50 cm in the mountainous heights of the capital, Amman.
Accordingly, and we have the example of storm Alexa, the chance of snowfall in the fall is likely, but statistically it is considered a rare event that does not happen very often, but it is possible to happen.
