Meteorology: June 2024 is the hottest in 100 years

Weather of Arabia - The Jordanian Meteorological Department revealed today, Sunday, that the current month of June has broken all records in terms of temperature rise recorded in the Kingdom for the same month 100 years ago.

Director of the Meteorological Department, Raed Rafid Al Khattab, said that the month of June witnessed, from its beginning until its end, temperatures higher than the general daily averages by about (3-10) degrees Celsius, as a result of the Kingdom’s continued influence by hot and dry air masses accompanying the extension of the seasonal low temperature. Which led to a significant rise in temperatures and the continuation of hot and dry weather over the mountainous highlands and plains, including the capital, Amman, which was very hot at times, while very hot weather prevailed on most days of the month in the Badia, Jordan Valley, and Aqaba regions.

During June 2024, the Kingdom was exposed to two heat waves. The first was in the period 2-8/06/2024 and lasted for 7 days, while the second wave was in the period 12-20/06/2024 and lasted for 9 days, which is the longest heat wave in the month that the Kingdom has witnessed. During the current month of June 2024, while the heat wave that the Kingdom was exposed to in the month of August last year is considered the longest heat wave in the Jordanian climate record, which lasted for 13 days during the period (12-24) August.

Al Khattab added that the highest maximum temperature recorded at the Amman Civil Airport monitoring station in the month of June this year reached 40.8°C on 06/15/2024, setting a new record for the month of June in its climate record, while the Queen Alia International Airport monitoring station recorded the highest temperature. The maximum temperature in the capital, Amman, on 06/14/2024 reached 41.5°C.

As for the Kingdom, the King Hussein International Airport monitoring station in the city of Aqaba recorded the highest maximum temperature in the Kingdom, reaching 47.8 degrees Celsius on 06/14/2024, setting a new record for the month of June in its climate record.

The average maximum temperature at Amman Civil Airport in the capital, Amman, reached 36.2 degrees Celsius, which is the highest monthly average seen in June in more than 100 years, which was 5 degrees Celsius higher than the general monthly average.

Al Khattab reported that most of the nights in June 2024 witnessed a significant rise in minimum temperatures above their general daily average by about (2-10) degrees Celsius, as the average minimum temperature for June 2024 at Amman Civil Airport reached 23.2 degrees Celsius, an increase above its monthly average. The year increased by 4.5 degrees Celsius, exceeding the previous record recorded in 2016 of 20.9 degrees Celsius.

Climatic records in the National Climatic Information Bank at the Meteorological Department, which last for more than 100 years, indicate that the average monthly maximum temperature at Amman Civil Airport for the month of June 2024 exceeded its previous record by 2.5 degrees Celsius, which was recorded in June 2012 and reached 33.7 degrees Celsius. The monthly average maximum temperature in June 2024 was also equal to the average monthly maximum temperature records for the months of July and August.

The forecasts of quarterly models from a number of international centers approved by the Meteorological Department also indicate that average temperatures during the months of July, August and September will be higher than their general averages by 1.0-1.5 degrees Celsius, with a probability exceeding 90%.
