The decline in the river level has caused major environmental problems, prompting environmental experts and government officials to sound the alarm if the situation continues as it is.

This was expressed by the appearance of the "Hunger Stone", which was discovered for the first time in 1918 and then between 2018 and 2022.

The water level of the Rhine River decreased significantly, as the depth of the water in some areas was measured at only 1.16 metres, while the normal depth of the river is considered to be about 2.40 metres.

Declining winter snowfall and persistent drought are major reasons for the decline in the Rhine River's waters. These changes reflect the impact of climate change on the pattern of rainfall and snow in the region, which in turn affects the flow of water in the river during the summer. Expectations indicate that this decrease in water levels may lead to serious repercussions on water sources, economic sectors, the environment and society in the region.

A decrease in the Rhine River's waters by up to 50% during the summer means less fresh water circulation, affecting water supplies for drinking, irrigation, industrial uses and transport across the river. Not only that, it can have a negative impact on the ecosystem and wildlife in the area.
