Scientists count the number of lakes on the planet

ArabiaWeather.com - A group of scientists from Sweden and Estonia conducted a study through which they developed a method that enabled them to detect the number of lakes around the world through satellites.

Scientists have reached that the number of lakes in the world is equivalent to 117 million lakes of different surface area and depth, with a surface area of more than 0.2 hectares in the images they captured.

The scientific team also discovered that lakes cover 4% of the Earth's surface, without counting the Greenland and Antarctic lakes that are covered by the ice layer.

The scientific team indicates that the length of these lakes is 250 times greater than the length of the equator.

It is noteworthy that this study was carried out within the framework of the "Water Color" project, which is devoted to studying changes in the organic matter present in water.
