جاء الإعلان عن إطلاق هذه الخدمة من قبل "مارك زوكربيرج" المؤسس والرئيس التنفيذي لموقع التواصل الاجتماعي " facebook" عبر منشور جاء فيه: "إن السكان شعروا بالزلزال أيضًا في بنجلاديش وميانمار ونيبال، فإذا كنت في مكان قريب، فسنرسل إليك إشعارًا للوصول إلى خدمة التحقق من السلامة حتى يطمأن عليك من يهمه الأمر"، مشيرًا إلى أنه يتمنى سلامة الجميع في المناطق المتضررة.
وكان الزلزال الذي ضرب الهند قد أودى لمقتل 11 على الأقل وإصابة 130 آخرين بحسب آخر احصائية مُعلنة من قبل الحكومة، وسط توقعات بارتفاع أعداد الضحايا خلال الساعات القادمة.
