“There is no need to worry about antioxidants in everyday food, but it appears that most people do not need additional amounts of them and in fact, they can be harmful to cancer patients and individuals with a high risk of developing cancer.”
The team explained that antioxidants reduce levels of free oxygen radicals, but when ingested in additional quantities, the reduced level of free oxygen radicals activates a protein known as BACH1 , which leads to the formation of new blood vessels, which is known by classification as angiogenesis.
A recent study conducted by a research team led by Professor Martin Bergo revealed that vitamins A, C, selenium, and zinc all contribute to stimulating the formation of new blood vessels within cancerous tumors in the lung. Scientists believe that these results could be relevant to all types of cancer, and may contribute to the spread of cancer in the lungs. the body.
Ting Wang, a PhD student in Professor Bergo's team, said:
“Our study opens the door to thinking about more effective ways to prevent angiogenesis within tumors. For example, patients whose tumors express high levels of BACH1 may benefit more from treatments directed at inhibiting angiogenesis, especially compared to patients whose tumors express low levels of BACH1.” BACH1".
