In pictures | It is not the first time. The Derna Valley has a history full of disasters
Weather of Arabia - This is not the first time that the Derna Valley has flooded. History bears witness to many similar incidents in the same valley and in the same city. This is confirmed by the history of the region, and among the most prominent of these floods are:
Derna flood in 1959
This flood is considered one of the strongest floods that struck the city of Derna in the last century, specifically in early October of the year 1959. During those days, the country was subjected to weather disturbances, as a result of which large amounts of rain fell, causing the Derna Valley to flood, sweeping away masses of land with it. A huge pile of rocks blocked the valley, causing water to overflow and sweep the city, destroying many homes. It was recorded at the Derna meteorological station at 300 mm.
Flood of 1941 AD
The city of Derna had previously been exposed to a devastating flood in the year 1941 AD, which coincided with the outbreak of World War II. Some historical sources state that the flood swept away German tanks, troop carriers, and military equipment that were near the Wadi al-Naqa stream at the western entrance to the city.
Modern history records more and more floods that struck the valley, causing great losses in the city, including floods in the years 1955 - 1968 - 1982 - 1986 - 2011.
The most powerful and devastating flood that hit the city of Derna as a result of the direct effects of Hurricane Daniel, which caused the death of more than 5,300 people and left 10,000 people missing.
