Because of its historical and religious importance, it is the third holiest place for Muslims after Makkah Al-Mukarramah and Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, and it was the first qiblah for Muslims in prayer before the qiblah turned to the Kaaba in Makkah.
The religious significance of Jerusalem for Muslims is due to the fact that it is the place where the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, where he was taken by Gabriel, peace be upon him, to it, and from which he ascended to the highest heavens. It also occupies great importance to Christians and Jews.
In Jerusalem, two prominent Islamic landmarks are located: the Dome of the Rock, which contains the Holy Rock, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which was built during the Umayyad era.
