ولهذا الطائر خمسة أنواع ، منها ما هو مهدد بالانقراض ، وقد كان لإزالة الغالبات أثراً كبيراً في تناقص أعدادها ، فضلاً عن المهدد الأكبر لحياتها ألا هو افتراسها من قبل بعض الثديات ، أما حالياً فهناك العديد من المحميات والحدائق الوطنية الممتدة على مساحات شاسعة والتي توفر لها البيئة المناسبة .
َظهَرَ طائر الكيوي كرمز وطني في نيوزيلاندا لأول مرة أواخر القرن التاسع عشر ، وخلال الحرب العالمية الأولى أطلق لقب "كيوي"على الجنود النيوزلنديين ، ومن ثم انتشر هذا اللقب فصار يطلق على كل النيوزلنديين في بلادهم وخارجها .
