Weather of Arabia - The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Qatar revealed a video clip of its monitoring of a huge gathering of "Socotra cormorants", which appeared to be invading the shore of Khor Al-Udid.
Khor Al Adaid is located in the southeastern region of Qatar, about 80 kilometers from Doha, and the best way to reach it is by using a four-wheel drive vehicle, according to the Qatar Tourism website.
The Ministry stated, through its official account on Twitter, that the Socotra cormorant bird, which is known locally as the "Luh", breeds in the Qatari islands, including Al-Safiliya Island, Ras Rukn Island, and Al-Alia Island, and the bird is characterized by the following:
- The Socotra cormorant builds its nest from small twigs and dry seaweed.
- Fish is his main meal.
- It is an endemic bird of Socotra, the Persian Gulf and the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.
- The Socotra cormorant is known to be a social bird, lives in large flocks, and is a marine species.
- Adult Socotra cormorants have black plumage and a slender neck. As for the immature birds, they have brown plumage, and are often distinguished by their white color on the belly and chest from below.
The Socotra cormorant is considered an endangered bird, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and its main sources of threat are coastal development, human disturbance, and marine pollution near nesting colonies.
