Weather of Arabia - Al-Asfar Lake is one of the most important shallow wetland lakes in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia. It is the largest water body in the Arabian Gulf, with an area of 340 square kilometers. Lake Asfar contains a rich wildlife, making it a shelter for many migratory birds that visit the area twice a year, such as ducks, geese, various types of fish, turtles and frogs, in addition to many marine algae, and many different desert plants grow around the lake, including tamarisk, artichoke, Shannan and fern And when the water recedes in the summer, it becomes pasture for sheep and camels, and because agricultural drainage water flows into it, this prevents the formation of harmful swamps in the area.

Lake Al-Asfar was part of a waterway known previously as the "Al-Mahlam Al-Azeem" river, which crosses Al-Ahsa through Al-Ayoun near Jabal Al-Qara and Jabal Abu Hasis, to flow into the waters of the Arabian Gulf, to be used for water transport of goods as a source of irrigation.

The lake was named after the "Al-Asfar Al-Falabi" who ruled the region in the era of the Abbasids.

Sources of water flowing into the lake:

• Pure rain water.
• From the private banks where the rest of the watering palms and farms.
• Farm irrigation drains.
• Wastewater that is completely treated from Hofuf stations, and partially treated by sedimentation and sterilization, coming from Al-Omran station.
