How are hurricanes named in the countries of East Asia and the Arabian Sea?
It is noteworthy that the countries of East Asia chose to move away from the American names, so they started calling their hurricanes themselves, and canceled the names imported from America, such as Hurricane "Ted" and Hurricane "Franky", which are American names given to the Asian hurricanes on the pretext that they are not understood by their peoples, so they used animal names instead of names. Mankind is like Hurricane Damre, which means "Elephant" in the Cambodian language, and Hurricane "Kyrouji" which is the name of a rare species of wild duck in North Korea.
Hurricanes that are forming in the northern Indian Ocean are named by the Regional Meteorological Center based in New Delhi - India on behalf of the member countries of the International Meteorological Organization Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
Who chooses the names of storms and hurricanes ..? A question that appears among millions of people who follow the news of the weather, storms, and hurricanes that affect the region, including the tropical cyclone "Maha" which is currently active in the Gulf of Oman, and before it Hurricane "Kiar", which had some indirect effects on the eastern coast of the country.
«Emirates Today» sought to obtain an answer to this question through the National Meteorological Center, so the response was from the head of the Marine Forecast Department Member of the Committee for the names of storms and hurricanes in the northern Indian Ocean, the Sea of Oman and the Bay of Bengal, Majid Nasser, who said: “The names of storms and hurricanes are not chosen randomly or locally. There is a committee concerned with launching these names, which was previously composed of eight countries in the northern Indian Ocean. , Until the UAE and four other countries joined it last year, bringing the number of its members to 13.
Nasser added: “Every year every member of the committee selects a name for a storm, and all names are placed on a list similar to the periodic table, so that each name is used according to the alphabetical order of the members of the committee, and when any tropical storm is formed, a name is launched according to the arrangement The names in the pre-prepared schedule », stressing that it is not required that the name of the storm be chosen by the countries it passes through or affected by.
Regarding the rules and mechanisms for selecting storm names, Nasser said: «In the beginning, a name is not given to any storm in the northern Indian Ocean region, the Sea of Oman, or the Bay of Bengal, except when it becomes tropical, according to the rates of the wind speeds generated by it, then the name mentioned in a table is used. The names previously placed on the list by the committee are in descending order (top to bottom), as each member of this committee is tasked with choosing a name for a storm, provided that the name is easy to pronounce and does not have any meaning, use, or political, religious, ethnic, or racist overthrow, The full names are then submitted to the committee for consideration and approval, to be developed The ready-to-use list in the order ».
He added, “Given the most recent tropical storms in the region, which are storm Maha, which developed into a second-degree tropical cyclone, the Sultanate of Oman chose this name for it, according to its role in the list of names selection, and before it was the tropical storm Kiar that turned into a hurricane A few days ago, it was the Myanmar state that chose this name. Likewise, Hurricane Heika, it was called by the Maldives State, and also Hurricane Vaio was the name of the State of India »
