Due to climate change, the period from June to August 2024 will be the hottest in the world in 175 years. Has the era of global boiling begun?

Arab Weather - August 2024 recorded the highest global temperature ever, as temperatures exceeded the previous monthly average by 1.27 degrees Celsius (2.29 degrees Fahrenheit), making it the hottest August in the history of records. This slight increase of 0.01 degrees Celsius (0.02 degrees Fahrenheit) above the previous record set in August last year, making it the fifteenth consecutive month to record global temperatures. According to NOAA, this month was also the second warmest month for global ocean surface temperatures, and this was under neutral La Niña conditions.

In the Northern Hemisphere, temperatures were the second-hottest August on record, at 1.48 °C (2.66 °F) above average. The Southern Hemisphere had its warmest August on record, at 1.06 °C (1.91 °F) above average. Antarctica also recorded its second-hottest August on record.

Breaking temperature records from June to August

The period from June to August 2024 was the hottest on record in the 175-year record, 1.24°C (2.23°F) above the 20th-century average. That this summer remains the hottest on record in the Northern Hemisphere is a sign of ongoing global warming, while the Southern Hemisphere winter was the warmest on record.

An exceptional climate condition is experienced in central and southern Europe, which will continue in the coming days.

Global rainfall variability

Different parts of the world experienced marked variations in rainfall amounts. Some areas, such as parts of Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa, were drier than usual. Other areas, including the southeastern United States, parts of India and Pakistan, and parts of Japan, saw above-average rainfall. Parts of West Africa, Argentina, and Canada also saw above-average rainfall.

Has the era of global boiling already begun?

Last year, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres referred to the "age of global boiling" to emphasize the seriousness of the climate crisis. He said that rising global temperatures are increasingly affecting societies and environments, stressing the need to take urgent action to address climate change. For their part, experts at the Arab Weather Center said that the world is not experiencing a "boiling" phase in the scientific sense of the word, as this is not the first time that heat waves and high temperatures have been witnessed, as these extreme waves "are the actual translation of climate change."
