و يُعتبر الجراد الصحراوي من أخطر انواح الحشرات على الغطاء النباتي و الاراضي الزراعية نظراً لقدرته الكبيرة على التكاثر و التنقل بشكل سريع و عبر مسافات كبيرة داخل القارة،و قد كان سبباً كبيراً في فقدان المحاصيل الزراعية عبر التاريخ في مناطق إفريقيا و الشرق الاوسط.
