Warnings as Hurricane Oscar hits US, threatening major coastal flooding

Arab Weather - Hurricane Oscar made landfall in eastern Cuba on Sunday evening, an island that is suffering from widespread power outages. This came after it swept through the southeastern Bahamas. According to the US National Hurricane Center in Miami, the center of the storm reached the Cuban province of Guantanamo near the city of Baracoa on Sunday evening.

Hurricane Oscar brought heavy rains and strong winds to eastern Cuba after making landfall. The storm hit the coast near Baracoa, producing thunderstorms and heavy rains that caused moderate flooding in the area. Cuban media reported damage to buildings along the coast due to the high waves that hit the area.

Hurricane Oscar's impact continues

The storm is expected to continue to affect eastern Cuba through Wednesday morning, with rainfall amounts expected to range from 6 to 12 inches, with some locations potentially reaching 18 inches. Waves could also rise to 3 feet in some northern coastal areas.

Hurricane Oscar was initially a Category 1 storm, with sustained winds of 75 mph when it made landfall in Guantanamo Province near Baracoa. The storm is expected to gradually weaken as it moves north toward Cuba, then move toward the southeastern and central Bahamas late Monday.

The center of the hurricane was about 20 miles west of the eastern tip of Cuba and 45 miles east of Guantanamo, moving slowly at 6 mph toward the west-southwest.

Earlier, Oscar made landfall on Great Inagua Island in the Bahamas, bringing coastal flooding and 2 to 4 inches of rain, with some areas recording up to 6 inches.

The hurricane comes at a delicate time for Cuba, which is trying to recover from the worst blackout in two years that left millions of people without power for two days last week. However, some electricity services were restored on Saturday.
