Türkiye | Forest fire extends to residential areas in Izmir (injuries, building damage)

Arab Weather - The Turkish Ministry of Health announced, on Friday, that 78 people were injured due to a forest fire in Izmir Province (west of the country), including 29 people who are still receiving treatment in hospitals.

The fire spread to residential areas in Izmir, Turkey's third-most populous city, Turkish media reported late Friday. Authorities said three neighborhoods in the Karsiyaka and Bayrakli districts had been evacuated and 16 buildings were damaged by the fires.

Regarding fighting the fire, the ministry explained in its statement that it had sent 10 ambulances and 3 teams from the National Medical Rescue Team Unit, in addition to 42 health care workers to the area to help control the fire.

Fire details in Türkiye

The fire broke out in the Yamanlar Mountain area of Izmir on Tuesday and was largely under control by Thursday afternoon. But the flames reignited on Thursday evening, spreading rapidly due to winds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban said. Thick smoke blanketed almost the entire city, turning the sky orange and gray in images broadcast by Turkish media. Animal rights activists also evacuated a shelter for stray dogs.

Regarding the cause of the fire, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli said that the fire broke out in the forest areas due to a fire set by three people during a picnic.
