Developing an application that monitors and predicts earthquakes

Arabiaweather.com- A group of scientists succeeded in developing an application for smartphones that monitors the vibrations resulting from earthquakes , through the advanced sensors in those devices. Researchers from the University of California collaborated with their counterparts at Deutsche Telekom's Innovation Center to develop the MyShake app for Android phones.

Scientists said that the application represents only the first building block of an ambitious project that seeks to build a global network capable of monitoring earthquakes in various regions of the world, to develop over time and be able to warn users minutes before the occurrence of any future earthquakes. According to the study, which was published by the team based on the application in the scientific journal "Science Advances", the application collects and analyzes information through advanced phone sensors, then sends it to the main servers of the Seismological Science Laboratory in Berkeley.

It is reported that the scientific team has already developed advanced algorithms that can distinguish between the types of tremors resulting from earthquakes and those resulting from the normal movement of the user during the activities of his daily life.
