Weather of Arabia - Jordan is affected on Sunday and Monday by the extension of the so-called Red Sea depression, but what is the Red Sea depression and how will its effects be on the Kingdom?

First, what is the Red Sea depression?

The Red Sea depression is known as a thermal depression that depends on the thermal differences in its formation, depth, decay or shrinkage, which arise between the water surface temperature in the Red Sea basin and the land temperature in the Arabian Peninsula and Sudan.

Surface pressure values decrease in normal conditions with increasing temperatures, and this explains the reason for the contraction and weakness of the Red Sea depression and its retreat to the south (towards the southern Red Sea and eastern Sudan) in the summer, and its deepening and expansion north in the fall, winter and spring.

How will the effects of the Red Sea depression affect Jordan?

Specialists in the Arab Weather Center said that the Red Sea thermal depression does not follow the characteristics of the Mediterranean frontal depressions, so that its effects on the Kingdom are in the form of:

1. High temperatures and dry weather

The depression in the Red Sea will cause temperatures to rise several degrees higher than their usual rates on Sunday and Monday, and a dry atmosphere will prevail in general, so that the weather will be sunny and cold during the day over the mountainous heights and moderate in the rest of the Kingdom’s regions, while the weather will continue to be cold at night, God willing.

2. Moderate southeasterly winds, which may become active at times

In conjunction with the dry extension of the Red Sea depression during the coming days, an air rise extends from the north and east, so that moderate easterly winds blow, which may become active at times.

3. Stable weather

Atmospheric instabilities are formed when appropriate weather conditions are available, that is, when the extension of the Red Sea depression coincides with the eruption of the cold upper basins from the north towards the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea and northern Egypt and its movement eastward, and a convergence occurs between the warm air currents resulting from the expansion of the Red Sea depression in layers The lower atmosphere, with cold air currents in the upper layers of the atmosphere, coinciding with the high levels of humidity in the atmosphere.

However, in our case, and with the extension of an air elevation in the upper layers of the atmosphere, it is expected that the Red Sea depression will extend ineffectively, meaning that it will be accompanied by a stable and dry atmosphere, God willing.

God knows.
