Here, a new approach following a “component-based approach” to severe weather forecasting identifies important aspects of the response of extreme rainfall to climate change, relevant from an impacts perspective and that have been largely neglected to date. Using climate simulations at 2.2 km, we show that future increases in extreme precipitation across Europe occur not only due to higher humidity and updraft velocities, but also due to slower storm movement, increasing their local duration.
According to his study, currently, severe, almost constant rainstorms are uncommon in Europe and rarely occur over parts of the Mediterranean, but they are expected to occur in the future across the continent, including in the north. The main reason appears to be a decrease in the temperature difference between the poles and the tropics, which weakens upper-level winds in the fall, when these short-term extreme events occur. This slow movement of storms is increasing locally accumulated rainfall amounts, enhancing the risk of flash flooding across Europe beyond what was previously expected.
