The year 2020 witnessed the first steps of the city of NEOM towards becoming a major player in the global hydrogen market, through the signing of a partnership agreement between NEOM, Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power and American Air Products, which resulted in the establishment of the "NEOM Green Hydrogen" company.

This partnership represented the first investment of the city of NEOM in the field of renewable energy, by starting actual steps to implement the largest green hydrogen production plant in the world.

• The establishment of the largest green hydrogen production plant comes within the framework of the Kingdom's endeavor to supply and fully operate the city of NEOM with clean energy, with the aim of achieving a circular economy and reaching carbon neutrality.

• The plant will rely on solar and wind energy to generate the electricity needed to produce that environmentally friendly fuel, which represents one of the sustainable solutions for the global transport sector.

• From the plant, Saudi Arabia aims to provide green hydrogen as a clean fuel for the transportation sector, in addition to use in the chemical industry, especially by leading Saudi companies such as Aramco, SABIC and Ma’aden, as it is considered essential for green chemicals, with export to the global market.

• With the start of operation of the largest green hydrogen production plant in the world, all of its production will be exported abroad, in the form of green ammonia, as the American partner in the plant will be the exclusive buyer of green ammonia, with its transfer to global markets.

Why did you choose NEOM for the project?

The NEOM region is located on the Red Sea coast in northwest Saudi Arabia, to include several cities, including "The Line" and "Oxagon", which represents the region's center for advanced and clean industries, and hosts the largest green hydrogen production plant in the world.

NEOM confirms that the location of its cities is among the few regions in the world where green hydrogen can be produced in large quantities at a competitive price, which it attributed to the region's favorable climate and abundant sunlight.

The NEOM site on the Red Sea coast provides several natural factors, such as sunlight and wind, which encourages the generation of electricity from renewable energy, which is the main element in the production and export of green hydrogen to meet the needs of importing markets such as Japan and Europe.
