COP28 President calls for unified efforts to achieve climate achievements
ArabiaWeather - Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and President of the Conference of the Parties "COP28" , confirmed that the world is moving in the right direction in combating climate change, but speed is by no means sufficient.
He made these statements at the opening of the preliminary ministerial meetings of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), which were held in Abu Dhabi on Monday and Tuesday. Al Jaber called for the need to unite the world's efforts to confront the repercussions of climate change and achieve the desired achievements during the conference meeting in Dubai.
Al Jaber also stressed that the conference presidency is working to support the achievement of fundamental progress in climate action by unifying opinions and promoting effective cooperation to ensure the achievement of common climate and development goals. This comes in accordance with the vision of the leadership in the Emirates.
The preliminary ministerial meetings are in preparation for the major conference meeting, and this year witnessed a record attendance with the participation of more than 100 delegations and 70 ministers from various countries of the world, which far exceeds the normal number of participants in these annual meetings.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber explained, in his opening speech, that despite the current global division, which has multiple causes, there is an urgent need for concerted and unified efforts on the issue of climate action. He pointed out the importance of demonstrating the international community's ability to investigate and send a clear message that supports hope, solidarity, stability and well-being. He stressed the need to maintain the possibility of achieving the 1.5 degree Celsius goal.
He also explained that the increase in temperatures before the Paris Agreement was heading towards a level exceeding 4 degrees Celsius. Currently, the average rise is estimated at between 2 and 3 degrees Celsius according to announced policies. This indicates that the world is moving in the right direction, but speed is not enough.
He stressed the importance of intensifying the efforts of all parties to address the challenges more effectively, in light of the limited time available for work and the need to accelerate the required procedures and avoid delaying them. He stressed that the interests of each party in climate action are a common interest for all, and that the achievements of COP28 should be evidence of the feasibility of multilateral action.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and President of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), called for a decisive and effective response to assess global progress in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and correct the course of global action aimed at achieving them. He also stressed the importance of focusing efforts on the areas of mitigation, adaptation and financing, including increasing adaptation financing and stimulating private sector investments in the climate field.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber called for reducing emissions from the current energy system, increasing global production capacity for renewable energy, and doubling energy efficiency. He stressed the importance of achieving strong solutions to reduce emissions by 43 percent by 2030. He also called on countries to announce their commitments that are appropriate to their national circumstances and to enhance cooperation and coordination to reach joint solutions and consensus between parties in the field of combating climate change.
