The competent authorities and some scientific bodies in the countries of the Mediterranean basin announced that the tremor was a wave of a violent earthquake that struck Crete, southern Greece, with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center had stated earlier that the magnitude of the earthquake was 6 degrees, and later revised it to 5.4 degrees, then to 5.7 degrees, and added that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 80 kilometers.

It is noteworthy that the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea is often subject to earthquakes, and light earthquakes occur in the Mediterranean basin on an almost daily basis.
