A 5.9 magnitude earthquake strikes northwest China
Arabia Weather - More than 110 people were killed as a result of an earthquake measuring 5.9 degrees , which struck Gansu Province in northwestern China at night on Monday, according to official media reports in China at dawn on Tuesday, and the official television network “CCTV” reported that The Gansu Disaster Relief Authority confirmed 100 deaths and dozens of injuries as a result of this violent earthquake.
The earthquake occurred in Gansu Province, near the border with Qinghai Province. CCTV indicated that the city of Haidong in Qinghai Province suffered heavy losses, as the earthquake resulted in the death of 11 people and the injury of more than 100 others.
On the other hand, the official Chinese news agency, Xinhua, reported that the earthquake caused severe material damage, including the collapse of buildings, and forced many residents to take refuge in the streets. Xinhua confirmed that the authorities had immediately deployed relief teams to the affected area. She indicated that efforts to extract victims and search for survivors under the rubble began in the early morning hours of Tuesday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for "all possible efforts" in search and rescue operations after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Gansu Province in northwest China, and videos posted on social media showed roofs of buildings falling and debris accumulating on roads, according to the "Xinhua" agency, The earthquake caused water and electricity supplies to be cut off in some villages.
The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of about ten kilometers, about 100 kilometers southwest of Langshu, the capital of Gansu Province, and was followed by several aftershocks, according to the American Institute of Geophysics.
China witnesses earthquakes not infrequently. Last August, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in the east of the country resulted in 23 people injured and many buildings destroyed. In September 2022, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in Sichuan Province, southwest China, caused the death of 100 people. In 2008, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan Province, killing more than 87,000 people, including 5,335 schoolchildren.
