A secret fluid turns into a tree... How so?
ArabiaWeather - Planting trees in cities is a popular strategy to reduce carbon dioxide, but how can we deal with pollution in dense cities that lack green spaces? In an innovative attempt, a team of scientists in Serbia has come up with an unconventional solution: a “liquid tree” .
Belgrade is one of the most polluted cities in Serbia; Due to the presence of two large coal power plants, these plants contribute significantly to air pollution. Belgrade is considered among the 10 most polluted plants in Europe, and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation report shows that pollution causes more harm than HIV, tuberculosis and malaria combined.
Currently, Serbia ranks 28th globally in air quality, with the concentration of PM 2.5 4.9 times higher than the level set by the World Health Organization, and citizens are suffering from serious negative impacts, as Serbia is ranked first in Europe in terms of the death rate caused by pollution. .
This innovative discovery reflects ongoing efforts to address environmental challenges in large cities, and represents a step towards improving air quality and community health.
Clean air challenges in cities... The liquid tree represents an innovative solution in Serbia
Cities around the world face significant environmental challenges, contributing up to 75% to carbon dioxide emissions. In Serbia, the population in urban areas is increasing, which makes achieving the goal of improving air quality by conventional means difficult due to population density.
But here comes the solution with Dr. Ivan Spasojevic, who has developed an innovative tool known as the “Liquid Tree” or LIQUID 3. This new innovation is considered the first urban photobioreactor in Serbia. It contains 600 liters of water , and uses microalgae to bind carbon dioxide. carbon and produce pure oxygen using photosynthesis. In this way, the liquid tree is a tangible and effective solution to reduce emissions and improve air quality in dense cities where green spaces may be limited.
LIQUID 3...an innovation that reduces air pollution in urban areas
Microalgae achieves an environmental breakthrough that replaces nature in cities, where trees cannot be easily grown. LIQUID 3, also known as the “liquid tree” , is a biotechnological solution that reduces carbon dioxide emissions and enhances air quality in urban areas.
In an innovative technical experiment, two 10-year -old trees or a 200-square-meter lawn area were replaced with LIQUID 3. This innovation relies on the process of photosynthesis using microalgae, which binds carbon dioxide and produces oxygen. Algae shows 10 to 50 times greater effectiveness than trees in... Air cleaning.
LIQUID 3 was placed on Makedonska Street in Belgrade, where emissions are considered to be highly concentrated. The project is a multi-functional technology, as it works as a seat and a charger for mobile phones, and contains a solar panel, which makes it not only provide an environmental solution, but also contribute to improving the lives of citizens, The system uses freshwater algae, and the resulting algae can be used as fertiliser, enhancing its environmental and economic role in society.
LIQUID 3... Creativity in climate change solutions and urban development
Thanks to its creative, practical and innovative design, the LIQUID 3 initiative won one award among the 11 best innovative and smart solutions in the field of climate change, within the Climate Smart Urban Development Project, implemented by the United Nations Development Program and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, under the auspices of the Global Environment Facility.
LIQUID 3 embodies pride in innovation in the field of climate solutions and smart urban development. By activating civil society and listening to the general public, we can achieve an integrated understanding and innovation on how to effectively address the challenges of climate change. These joint efforts will undoubtedly contribute to providing distinct solutions to mitigate the effects of this phenomenon. Transformation, which will bring positive benefits to all fields.
