Santa Fe was once the capital of the Spanish and then Mexican territories north of the Rio Grande, but its history extends far beyond the arrival of the Spanish, as it is believed to have been the site of abandoned Puebla villages since the time of the Spanish arrival in 1607.
Santa Fe became the capital of the state of New Mexico when the latter was established in 1912, and since the early 20th century the region has been able to attract a number of artists, especially after the arrival of Igor Stravinsky and the establishment of the Santa Fe Opera.
The region continues to be important on the American art scene, as it is the third largest art market in America, after New York and Los Angeles, which is impressive considering Santa Fe's population is comparable to New York City and Los Angeles.

Much of the city's appeal is due to its cultural scene, and its geographical location at the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which results in a temperate continental climate with four distinct seasons.
Santa Fe has pleasant winters that are often warm and don't snow every year, spring is dry and mild and perfect for trekking, early summer (June and July) is very hot but gives way to a pleasant mountain climate with some rain, and autumn is fickle with winds Seasonal September and frost in October.
