Arab Weather - Chinese scientists have announced the development of a "completely new method" to produce large quantities of water using soil from the moon, according to China Central Television. The discovery is based on lunar soil brought back by the Chang'e-5 mission in 2020, the first time in 44 years that humans have obtained samples from the moon.

Lunar soil as a source of water

Research by the Chinese Academy of Sciences has revealed that minerals in lunar soil contain large amounts of hydrogen. When this soil is heated to high temperatures, hydrogen reacts with other elements to produce water vapor. According to China Central Television, this new method was developed after three years of intensive research and experiments.

The technology is an important step toward building scientific research stations on the moon and future space stations. According to estimates, one ton of lunar soil can produce between 51 and 76 kilograms of water, enough for 50 people to drink a day. The discovery comes as China is developing a long-term project to establish a permanent outpost on the moon, in cooperation with Russia, under the "International Lunar Research Station" initiative.

The announcement of this discovery comes in the context of an increasing race between China and the United States to discover and exploit the moon’s resources. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson has expressed his concerns about the rapid progress of the Chinese space program and the possibility of Beijing dominating resource-rich sites on the moon.

Not only is lunar water important for supporting human existence, it could also be used to produce hydrogen rocket fuel, facilitating future exploration missions to Mars and elsewhere in space.
