Terror in San Luis waters moments with humpback whales

In a world full of exciting experiences and interesting moments, this woman tells her story in San Luis Obispo, California, where the beauty of nature and the wonder of adventures intertwine. She and her husband, Tyrone McSorley, live five kilometers offshore, and every few years, humpback whales come into the bay during their migration.

She said that in November 2020, we decided to take a double yellow kayak to see this amazing wildlife. We sat paddling along the pier, watching the seals, dolphins and about 20 whales feeding on the silvery fish. It was moments of wonder and awe as we watched these giant, graceful creatures, each about 50 feet long, dive and spray through their blowholes with their side flippers.

The next day, I asked my friend Liz, now 65, to join us on another trip on the water to see whales. “No way,” she replied cautiously. Liz was unfamiliar with kayaking and was afraid the boat would capsize while we were surrounded by hungry whales. I reassured her, saying: “The vehicle is stable, and we can return at any time.” After some thought, I finally agreed to the adventure. I didn't want Liz to miss out on this wonderful experience and regret it later.

At 8:30 the next morning, Liz and I got out on the water. We did find about 15 other kayakers and paddleboarders in the bay. It was warm for November, around 19°C, and after half an hour of paddling, we saw our first whale sighting near the pier, where two whales were swimming towards us and how amazing it is to be so close to creatures of this size, I thought as the whale dove below the surface.

When the whales go down after the breach, they leave what looks like an oil slick on the water and I thought that if we paddled towards this place, we would be safe from the whales because they had just left. We followed them at a distance, or so I thought. Later, we discovered that it was better to stay 300 feet away. We were assuming we were only 60 feet away, when suddenly we were pelted by a swarm of large, tightly packed fish, known as a “bait ball.”

What should have been a comedic moment turned into a truly terrifying moment. The behavior of these fish meant they were running away from the whales, which meant we had a desperate need to get out of there too. But before we could paddle to safety, we saw our kayak being lifted out of the water about six feet high, by two massive jaws. Liz and I slid from the kayak into the whale's mouth, which engulfed my body except for my right arm and paddle. Liz was looking directly at the whale's large upper jaw, which she later described as a "huge white wall."

When the whale's mouth closed, Liz raised her arm up to avoid being crushed. I felt the creature start to dive and I had no idea how deep it was dragging us. However, I didn't panic. I kept thinking: “I have to breathe.” Whales have huge mouths, but small throats, so they spit out anything they can't swallow right away, and that includes us. Once the whale went underwater, we shot out and resurfaced only about ten seconds later.

A few kayakers started paddling towards us, and one of them, a retired firefighter, asked if we had all our limbs. "We thought you were dead!" So he said. We weren't, of course. But I have become more aware of the power of nature and the ocean; Than you were before. Liz was shaken, and although she likened her experience to a near-death experience, she couldn't help but laugh when she returned home at the end of that day and discovered that she had brought with her a unique souvenir: six silver fish that had fallen out of her shirt.
