كانت بداية هذه المنظمة عام 1873م تحت اسم منظمة الأرصاد العالمية " IMO " فيما تم تغيير اسمها الى المنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية " WMO " عام 1950م ومن ثم باتت تتبع الأمم المتحدة منذ عام 1951م . وتضم حالياً عضوية 191 دولة . وقرها في جنيف - في سويسرا .
وتولت هذه المنظمة منذ بدايتها وحتى الآن ، مهاماً كثيرة في مجال الأرصاد الجوية وعلم الطقس والمناخ . تتضمن الإشراف على برامج عديدة أبرزها برنامج الطقس العالمي الذي الذي يهدف الى التبادل السريع للمعلومات الخاصة بحالة الطقس والذي يضم شبكات ومحطات رصد جوي بالإضافة لأقمار الصناعية وحواسيب ونظم اتصالات تغطي العالم . وبذلك تعمل المنظمة على توفير الإطار اللازم للتعاون الدولي بغية تطوير الأرصاد الجوية في العالم فضلاً عن دورها القيادي في مراقبة البيئة وحمايتها وابرام اتفاقيات متصلة بالبيئة .
