Arab Weather - Weather experts at the Arab Weather Regional Center said that with the approach of the winter square and the end of the fall season, all areas of the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Peninsula are still witnessing an absence of air depressions and winter weather patterns, as a strong air high controls all areas amid temperatures higher than their climatic averages for this time of year.

Modest rainfall performance so far, with no indications of mature depressions in the foreseeable future

Current data indicate that the rainfall performance so far, and with the countdown to the end of autumn, is still modest in various regions, especially the south of the Levant, particularly Jordan. According to the initial computer outputs, the initial indicators do not bode well for the eastern Mediterranean to be affected by mature or significant rainy weather systems in the foreseeable future, and at least during the next 5-7 days.

Rainfall performance is a term used to evaluate the amount of rainfall during a rainy season compared to the expected normal. When rainfall performance is described as poor, it means that rainfall is significantly below normal, leading to negative impacts on agriculture and water resources. The Al-Murabba’iyah or “the forty days of winter” begins in the Levant and most Arab countries on December 21/22 of each year, and continues for 40 days until the end of January (i.e. from December 21 to January 30), in what is known in short as “Al-Kawaneen”. In this year 2024, the Al-Murabba’iyah is expected to begin on December 22 and continue until January 30, 2025.

The winter solstice is considered the beginning of the "winter square" in the Levant and many Arab countries, which is the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere according to astronomical calculations. The regions located north of the equator (the Northern Hemisphere) witness the shortest day and longest night of the year.

Then after this day, the length of the night decreases and the length of the day increases gradually, as the sun begins to ascend to the north in its apparent movement in the sky, after reaching its southernmost point on the day of the winter solstice.
