Aerial term What is fog and how is it formed?
Arabia Weather - Fog is one of the natural weather phenomena that represents a source of dangers that hinder human activity and life, as it greatly affects the range of horizontal visibility in the field of land, sea and air transportation, so it is very important to determine the places where fog is expected to occur in advance.
It is considered one of the forms of condensation of water vapor present in the air, when the temperature drops to or below the dew point, which is the degree at which water vapor condenses, as it is the process in which water vapor turns from the gaseous state to the liquid state, which appears in the form of droplets of water.
Fog occurs when the relative humidity rises to above 90% to reach 100%, with cooling occurring when the air comes into contact with the surface of the earth, as we mentioned in the previous point, in addition to an important factor, which is the presence of condensation nuclei, as they are very small objects stuck in the air. The air is like smoke and dust.
Fog usually disappears, through heating by sunlight, several hours after sunrise, after the sun works to heat the air and the surface of the Earth. Sometimes the fog is dense and blocks the sun’s rays from reaching the surface of the Earth, and thus the surface of the Earth remains cold, and it usually occurs. This condition occurs in the winter, so it may last all day.
Types of fog:
- Radiation fog
- Transition fog
- Sea fog
- Evaporation fog
- Fog over the slope
- Freezing fog
- Low-lying stratus cloud fog
- Smog
