These violent turbulences forced the Boeing 777-300ER to make an emergency landing in the Thai capital, Bangkok, after flying over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, and Singapore Airlines announced the death of one person and the injury of others.

The company said in a statement on Facebook:

“We can confirm that there were injuries and one death on board the Boeing 777-300ER,” she said, noting that the plane was carrying “211 passengers and 18 crew members.”

Horror moments on board the Singaporean plane

The carrier company did not specify the number of injured people or the severity of their injuries, nor whether the deceased person was a passenger or a crew member. Reuters reported that 30 people were injured.

The American company Boeing said that it is in contact with Singapore Airlines regarding flight No. SQ321 and is “ready to provide support,” according to Reuters.

Video clips that were widely circulated on social media platforms showed the plane being exposed to violent turbulence, and the roofs of the plane appeared partially destroyed in footage taken after the emergency landing in Bangkok. Pictures also spread of one of the flight attendants injured and with blood on her face. Singapore Airlines reported that the flight was “S.Q. 321” took off from London’s Heathrow Airport and “encountered severe bumps en route.”

What happened on the Singapore plane?

The plane, which was diverted to Bangkok, landed at 15:45 local time (08:45 GMT) on Tuesday. The company reported that it is working with the local authorities in Bangkok to provide the necessary medical assistance, and has sent a team to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance.

With about three hours remaining on the flight from London to Singapore, Malaysian passenger, Zafran Azmir, felt uncomfortable when the plane began to shake violently. The 28-year-old braced himself and made sure to fasten his seat belt, noting that many other passengers did not. .

Izmir told Reuters:

“The plane suddenly dropped very heavily, causing passengers who were not wearing seatbelts to hit the roof of the plane, with some people’s heads hitting the overhead baggage compartments.” He added: "People fell to the ground, my phone flew out of my hand, and people's shoes flew off."

Izmir reported that crew members and people in the toilets were more susceptible to injuries, adding, "Crew members and people inside the toilets were injured more than others, because we discovered that people on the floor were unable to get up and there were a lot of injuries at the spine and head level."

The captain informed the passengers that they would make an emergency landing in Bangkok. Izmir said that as soon as the plane reached the runway, nurses and rescue workers came to check on the injured. “I don’t think they expected how bad it would be,” Izmir said. Ambulances later arrived, and Izmir saw at least 8 people being carried on stretchers from emergency exits, noting that it took 90 minutes to evacuate the plane.
