A heat wave in Mexico causes the death of 48 people, and temperatures are expected to rise and break records
Arabia Weather - 48 people died in Mexico as a result of the heat wave that the country has been experiencing since last March, according to what the government announced, with new record temperatures expected to be recorded.
According to the Ministry of Health report, the total number of deaths reached “48 at the national level” due to the heat wave that began in mid-March, and 956 people suffered from various health problems, according to data updated on May 21.
In 2023, a record 419 deaths were recorded due to an 8-month heat wave in Mexico, which has a population of 129 million.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recently noted that the current heat wave is “exceptional,” calling it “a very unfortunate natural phenomenon, which of course has a connection to climate change.”
He added that the high temperatures and lack of winds increase the problem of pollution in the capital, Mexico City, which has nine million people living within its administrative borders, and the number increases significantly when the suburbs are included.

Temperatures are expected to rise and record numbers will be broken
Temperatures are expected to intensify over the next two weeks, breaking new records, according to scientists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico who wrote on the X platform that “in the next 10 to 15 days, Mexico will witness the highest temperatures ever recorded in its history.” "This may generate high levels of pollution due to ozone."
Among the consequences of the heat wave is the death of “howler monkeys” in the state of Tabasco in the south of the country. Victor Morato, director of the veterinary hospital in the city of Comalcalco, explained that under the influence of the heat, monkeys sitting on the branches of tall trees in the rainforest faint and fall from a height of up to 20 meters. .
