طقس العرب- على الرغم من صلابة الصخور إلا أنه عندما تؤثر قوى السَحب او الدفع فيها فان النتيجة تكون تعرض الصخور لقوة كافية ليتغير شكلها بسبب الضغط العالي والشديد عليها، حيث تنكسر الصخور ثم تعود الحواف المكسورة سريعا الى مكانها الأصلي.

 

 وتسمى هذه العملية الارتداد المرن وتتغير اشكال الصخورعادة ببطئ أو لفترات طويلة، فمع تعرض الصخور للاجهادات تتراكم طاقة داخلها ثم تتحرر هذه الطاقة فجأة نتيجة تكسر الصخور.

 

وتؤدي  هذه التكسرات في الصخور إلى اهتزازات تنتقل خلال الصخر أو أي مادة في الأرض وإذا كانت الاهتزازات كبيرة بشكل كافٍ، فسوف نحس بها على هيئة زلزال
