Sorrento is also a great base for exploring this charming part of Italy, as it is within walking distance of the historic ruins of Pompeii and ancient Roman Herculaneum, and is also a starting point for hiking through the many trails in the Lattare Mountains. It is also connected to the islands of Passitano, the Amalfi Coast, and the island of Capri .

The Circumvesuviana train connects Sorrento with Pompeii in a 30-minute journey. It is a local train with no air conditioning, so the journey can be hot during the summer months, and because visiting Pompeii can be in half a day, the second half of your day can be used to visit Mt. Vesuvius.
