The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Authority explained on Sunday that “based on media reports circulated in a number of countries about some products of a Chinese company specializing in e-commerce causing diseases that threaten the safety of consumers, direct coordination has been made with the relevant government agencies to address The parent company, obliging it to remove all mentioned products as a precaution, and not allowing them to appear on e-commerce platforms or sell them to consumers in the Kingdom until they are confirmed to be safe and free of harmful substances.”

The Authority took the necessary precautionary and supervisory measures immediately, as “about 70 random samples received through consumer e-commerce websites in the Kingdom were drawn for testing by three different shipping sources.”

The results of the tests showed that the products were free of harmful substances and that there were no rates higher than what was permitted in the manufacture of these products, as the results of all laboratories confirmed that the products conformed to the requirements of the approved standard specifications.

The drawn samples were subjected to precise tests in accordance with the requirements of the approved standard specifications in the laboratories of the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, the laboratories of King Saud University, and one of the accredited private laboratories. These tests included measuring the level of chemical and toxic pollutants, phthalates, and the average concentrations of heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, and others.

The authority affirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to an integrated and strict system to verify the safety of consumer products, while continuing regulatory efforts to protect consumers and markets, and not to neglect taking the necessary measures to ensure the safety and health of consumers.

A few days ago, researchers warned that children's clothing and accessories sold by the fashion company Shein contain high levels of toxic chemicals linked to cancer and autism.

Random tests of clothing, bags, belts and other products have shown that they contain large amounts of chemicals, some of which contain more than 400 times the safe level of these compounds, which can seep through the skin into the bloodstream.

Tests were conducted in South Korea related to safety standards, and the results concluded that half of the 93 products tested contained toxic substances, including products intended for children.

A Shein spokesperson confirmed to AFP that they take product safety seriously, and are working with international testing agencies to ensure compliance with safety standards. The spokesman added that they conducted more than 400,000 chemical safety tests over the past year, and that they remove any product that contains unsafe materials as soon as they become aware of it.
