Wadi Al-Hitan..the land of wild whales
ArabiaWeather.com - Sinan Khalaf - is one of the tourist areas that are still unknown to many people in our Arab world to this day. The place is the land of Egypt, specifically in the Western Desert, 150 km southwest of the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
The Valley of the Whales, or as some describe it as the Valley of the Wild Whales, the area in question contains fossils and skeletons of whales that lived in ancient times in this desert area that was once completely covered with water, nearly 40 million years ago.
This time period comes at a time when the Tethys Sea extended to the far south of the Mediterranean Sea. It is assumed that the Tethys Sea had receded in the north, and over the years thick deposits of sandstone and rock formations appeared, which is today called the Valley of the Whales.
As for the fossils that have been found in the region so far, they are for a large group of extinct whales, which were dubbed "Archocity", while scientists and explorers are still collecting more information about the solutions of these whales and their way of life through their remaining bones in the region.
