يذكر أن المملكة العربية السعودية نجحت بخفض نسبة الأميّة من 60 % إلى 4 % خلال أربعين عاماً ويشار إلى أن الإهتمام بمحو الأمية برز في المملكة منذ أكثر من نصف قرن وتحديدًا في عام 1376هـ، حيث كان أول ظهور لنظام يختص بتعليم الكبار ومحو الأمية وما سبقه من تمهيد تعليمي تمثل في الكتاتيب وهي مدارس تعتمد على أدوات تقليديّة، ثم التعليم الأهلي وصولا للتعليم النظامي.
