What is `Overshooting Top` in meteorology?
Arab Weather - In meteorology, an Overshooting Top is a term that refers to the top of a towering cumulonimbus cloud, usually a cumulonimbus cloud, that extends above the troposphere and penetrates the stratosphere.
This occurs when the updraft within the cloud is so strong that it exceeds the equilibrium level in the troposphere, pushing moist air higher. The appearance of an Overshooting Top is an indication of strong activity within the storm, such as severe thunderstorms, storms with large hail, or tornadoes.
Visually, a breached top can be seen as part of the cloud that looks like bubbles coming out of the top of the main cloud, which is an indication that the cloud is carrying a lot of energy, increasing the chances of severe weather events.
