This oscillation occurs over a period of 30 to 60 days, and affects weather systems in parts of the world, such as stimulating tropical storms and increasing the chances of rainfall.

The MJO is important to meteorologists because it influences things like the development of tropical cyclones, the intensity of phenomena like El Niño and La Niña, and contributes to medium-range weather forecasts.
