Weather of Arabia - Climate change in the last decade has increased the cost of natural disasters, as rising sea levels and drought have increased the severity of floods and forest fires, according to insurance companies and experts in risk modeling.

The following is a list of the 10 most expensive events in the last decade, provided by RMS risk modeling company to Reuters, and the list includes disasters that have all occurred in the last five years, and includes disasters in order of economic losses, insured and uninsured, and the most expensive first.

1. 2017-2018 California wildfires

After several years of drought in California, several fires have destroyed more than 100 million trees.

• Loss in 2017: about $180 billion
• 2017 deaths: 40 people
• 2018 loss: about $148.5 billion
• 2018 deaths: 103 people
• Total losses: about $328.5 billion

2. Atlantic Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria August-September 2017

The 3 hurricanes devastated parts of Puerto Rico, Florida, the Caribbean and Texas.

• Harvey's loss: about $125 billion
• Harvey's deaths: 88 people
• Irma loss: about $65 billion
• Irma deaths: 134 people
• Maria's loss: $107 billion
• Maria's deaths: 4,600 people
• Total losses: about $297 billion

3. Australian bushfires 2019-2020

Nearly 11 months of fires have affected 80% of Australians and killed or displaced at least 3 billion animals.

4. Hurricane Ian, Florida, September 2022

The devastating hurricane struck all of South Carolina and southwest Florida and with a height of four meters on the west coast of Florida.

The devastating hurricane struck Louisiana, causing floods in New York and New Jersey and torrential rain.

6. Floods in Germany and Belgium, July 2021

Between 12 and 15 July 2021, torrential rain caused record levels of rivers and left a chain of destruction, especially in Belgium and Germany, as well as in Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

• Total losses: 40 billion euros ($40.93 billion)
• Deaths: 230 people

7. Pakistan floods from June to August 2022

Heavy monsoon rains and unusually hot temperatures in the Karakoram Mountains triggered an unprecedented melting of glacial ice, resulting in floods on June 14. The floods displaced 8 million people.

• Total loss: $40 billion (adjusted from initial estimate of $3 billion)
• Deaths: 1,717 people

8. Typhoons Faxai and Hagibis in Japan from August to October 2019

The two typhoons hit central and eastern Japan, and Faxai caused power outages in 900,000 homes, while more than 7 million people were asked to evacuate central Japan because of Hagibis.

• Hajibis loss: $17 billion
• Hagibis deaths: 85 people

9. The European heat wave, summer 2022

Central Europe suffered 3 heatwaves over the course of the summer, including the highest temperature ever measured in Britain at 40.3°C (104.54°F).

10. Heat wave in the northwest of the United States, British Columbia and Canada from June to July 2021

An intense heatwave from June 25 to July 1 across western Canada and the Pacific Northwest of the United States caused several wildfires.

• Deaths: 1400 people as a result of excessive heat
