13 Animals That Predict the Weather

Arab Weather - Some land and sea animals may be able to predict the weather and its changes through their behaviors and reactions. Writer Laila Narji, in a report published by the American magazine "Read's Digest", reviewed a group of these animals and explained their methods of predicting weather conditions.

frogs and toads

Amphibians are capable of signaling to humans about natural phenomena. For example, if frogs continue to croak loudly for longer than usual, this may be an indication of an approaching storm. Toads, on the other hand, can predict earthquakes because of underground shifts that change the chemistry of the basins they live in, causing them to flee.

 

 

Caterpillar

Caterpillars, which emerge in the spring in North America, can be used to predict the severity of the coming winter. The darker the brown color on their bodies, the milder the winter.

 

 

Night cricket

Crickets play a role in weather forecasting through the sound they make. Whenever the sound increases to about thirty times per minute, it may mean that the ambient temperature is about 21 degrees Celsius.

 

 

Birds

Ancient lore suggests that birds can predict the weather. When crows fly in pairs, good weather is expected, while if a crow flies alone, bad weather is predicted. Birds also tend to roost rather than fly before storms or severe cold, and are often seen lining up on power lines before rain.

 

 

Fish

Fish gain a sense of changes in air pressure, making them more active before rain. When air pressure drops, plant particles trapped at the bottom of lakes rise, attracting microscopic organisms that feed on small fish, and then larger fish.

 

 

Sheep

Before it rains, sheep gather in crowds to keep warm. There is a theory that frequent urination in the barns could be a sign that heavy rain is coming soon.

 

 

Bees and butterflies

Insects are some of the best weather forecasters, as low air pressure forces these tiny creatures to seek shelter before a storm, just like birds do.

 

 

Ladybugs

If ladybugs appear in large numbers, warm weather is expected. If they appear in small numbers, it may be a sign that cold weather is approaching, as ladybugs gather under the bark of plants to keep warm.

 

 

Spiders

According to National Geographic, when spiders start seeking shelter indoors, it may be a sign that cold weather is coming.

 

 

Rabbits, pigs and moles

Some animal behaviors may indicate the onset of a cold winter. Pigs are said to gather leaves and straw when winter approaches, while moles dig deep holes to accommodate the cold winter. The appearance of a fat rabbit in the fall is considered a sign that a harsh winter is approaching.

 

 

Cows

Cows can also predict the weather. If they lie in a field, it is likely to rain early. It is said that the direction of a cow’s tail can carry special meanings; if the tail is pointing west, it means the sky is clear, while if it is pointing east, it may indicate that the weather will become more difficult.

 

 

These instinctive animal behaviors suggest that animals rely on subtle changes in their environment to determine the weather ahead, giving us additional insight into the natural forces that govern our planet.
