Arab Weather - The number of victims of floods and torrential rains in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil has reached at least 37 people , while 74 others are still missing, according to official reports.
This is the fourth environmental disaster of its kind that Brazil has witnessed within one year, after the floods that struck the country in July, September, and November of 2023, with the total death toll reaching 75 people.
Several cities witnessed inundation with rainwater, and record levels of water levels were recorded, forcing thousands to leave their homes, according to the Civil Defense Agency, and the number of people who were forced to leave their homes reached more than 23 thousand people.
The Brazilian Geological Service indicated that the level of floods in the state exceeded the historical maximum recorded in 1941, and in some other cities it exceeded the highest levels recorded since records began about 150 years ago.
Meanwhile, operators reported interruptions in electricity, communications, and water services in various regions of the state, which negatively affected residents’ ability to communicate with their relatives in other regions. Due to interruptions in internet, telephone and electricity services.
Helicopters flew continuously over the cities, while stranded families with children waited for rescue operations on the rooftops.
Regarding weather conditions, Marcilio Cellucci, chief meteorologist at the National Center for Monitoring and Warning of Natural Disasters, confirmed in an interview with Brazil's public television network on Friday that the rainfall began on Monday and is expected to continue until at least Saturday.
