Arab Weather - 26 years ago, the idea of allocating October to raise awareness of breast cancer was launched in the United States of America, as a joint initiative between medical bodies, organizations and government agencies. The main goal of this month is to raise awareness about breast cancer, especially among women, and to provide information and services related to early detection of the disease.

Globally, the World Health Organization has encouraged the idea and urged countries to implement it because of its great impact. Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is held in October every year, is an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease and provide the necessary support to raise awareness of its seriousness and the importance of early diagnosis and effective treatment. During this month, participating institutions hold awareness campaigns that include the causes of the disease and methods of prevention, while highlighting the importance of screening using mammography as an effective means of reducing breast cancer deaths.
American organizations participating in this initiative include the American Cancer Society, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and others. These organizations work to raise awareness of the importance of early detection, as delayed diagnosis makes treatment more difficult and increases the risk of death, while early detection increases the chances of recovery.
The idea of the pink ribbon dates back to the early 1990s, when it was chosen as a symbol for breast cancer, inspired by the red ribbon that symbolizes AIDS. Pink is often associated with women with breast cancer, while blue represents men suffering from the same disease. Pink was chosen because of its association with femininity, and has become a symbol for awareness campaigns and financial support through the sale of ribbons and related products.
Since its inception in 1982, the Susan G. Koman Foundation has spent nearly $1.5 billion to fight breast cancer through 2010. The foundation focuses on awareness, research, health services, and social support programs, and has a presence in more than 50 countries around the world. However, some companies that exploit the pink ribbon have come under fire, with some believing that these companies benefit financially from selling products without providing the necessary financial support to patients.
According to the World Health Organization, about 1.38 million new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year, and the disease kills 458,000 people annually. Although the disease mainly affects women, men are also susceptible to it, albeit to a lesser extent. The prevalence of the disease depends on several factors, such as heredity, genes, obesity, and alcohol consumption, but scientists have not yet fully understood its mechanism.
